Very relaxing experience once you’re actually in the baths. The receptionist didn’t offer/mention towel rentals, so I was stranded in the changing area trying to dry myself off with my own clothes so I could go out to rent the towels for my family and myself. Korean bathhouses always provided them, so I didn’t think to ask. Luckily everything ended up drying off quickly. All of that could have been avoided had the guy cared to offer them.

This review is for day-use onsen. I wanted to try an onsen in Kawayu because I heard it was a famous place for baths. I was disappointed to see that the Kawayu area was so run-down. Half of the onsens and businesses were closed. The water at this onsen has a strong sulfur smell, but it felt quite pleasant. There were 5 baths and about 6-8 showers. Although the water is nice, the onsen was quite old and run-down. It must have been a beautiful place in the 1990's. And the entry cost was quite expensive. 1000 yen for adults and 700 yen for children! Although the water was nice, I felt it was too expensive for the location, condition and atmosphere of the onsen. I will probably try a different onsen the next time I come here, but it's not the worst if you can't find anything else open.

In the midst of a dead town (you know when you drive through the rust belt of shuttered shops), kinkiyu provides accommodation for tourists who want to visit Mt IO. On entering the hotel, we were served by an old couple, seemed like they were the only service staff. If you like sake this is the place for you. The room assigned was old but ok except there were no aircon or heater, but there's an air purifier which had such a thick coat of dust on the filter, looked like it had never been changed for years . We feared it would pollute the air instead. The hotel offered free flow of sake from 1500hrs and we were able to try different brands of sake. There's also free flow of fruit juices coffee and tea all at the lobby area. Unfortunately there were a lot of flies and mozzies which we are puzzled where they come from. Overall it was an OK stay for lack of better choices.

The building looks decrepit, but don't be fooled. The rooms are humble, but you would be wasting your time staying in the room if you had no cellular data. The front desk restricts wifi to the 1st floor. Enter the hot springs located on the first floor and you are greeted with a pungent sulfur smell. Although it takes time getting used too, you will be rewarded with revitalized skin and a relaxing hot spring soak. The hotel is also across the street from an unattended public hotspring where you can go to dip your feet. The hotel does provide slippers for this. The views are decent as you only see neighboring hotels and if your lucky, maybe parts of a mountain side. The Eco Museum Center is a short walk away. Overall, the hotel is a nice charming getaway: you must try the hot springs to realize this.

Very Nice, old and traditional hot spring hotel. Ambience is like going back in time to the 1960-1980s. Some staffs can speak english. And They provide instruction in paper in english which is helpful. Staffs are friendly and helpful. One of them help call taxi for us to go to mount IO as its too cold to walk and he also tell taxi to wait for us at Mount IO and then send us back to the hotel. The hot spring has indoor 40c, And out door39c, 40c, 42c. They said Its quite acidic and strong so don’t stay too long in the onsen. Its very good and relaxing. You can smell the sulfur. Awesome delicious buffet breakfast. Everything is delicious!! To get to hotel, take local bus (290yen )from kawayuonsen train station( bus stop at the front of train station) and it will stop right in front of hotel. There is bus to go back to kawayuonsen train station . Bus stop is across the hotel. I could not find the bus stop so The hotel staff is so kind and accompany me to the bus stop.

Two day one night stay in June 2018. Japanese style family room for 5 was more than adequate. Service was amazing and staff were friendly. Onsen is comfortable. Good location, near supermarket and convenience store. Recommended!

Friendly and helpful reception personnel (where could we store our wet bicycles?), a small but good onsen, a good breakfast buffet, free sake in the evening and coffee in the morning, simple but good rooms, a good vibe here.

A very cosy japanese style hotel. Service is good, japanese style beds are prepared by the staff. Restaurant included in hotel with public onsen. Unfortunately, no a/c is available so not recommended during summer time
